When I try to get onto device manager in windows xp it doesn't show anything,
no hardware or anything, just blank space.
How do I get to show the device manager correctly??

There is a rash of this going around, apparently connected to malware.
The AproposFix mentioned in the forum below:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14679793

seems to have fixed it for several posters. It would be wise to do
general malware scanning also.

Thanks for this info, Malke.
Actually, we have R. McCarthy to thank for it since he (or she, I don't
know which) found the connection and the fix. There have been 3 or 4 of
these posts very recently so there is something new going around.

I came across this thread b/c of same problem with device manager. Thanks
for the apropros fix which did the trick. (my epson scanner wasn't being
recognized) Another problem at same time is Photoshop elements 2 won't work
b/c of not finding a NEFLibrary3PS.dll. Could this be related or likely
another problem? Reloading PSE2 hasn't fixed it.

Don't thank me for the fix, I just happen to cross reference enough links
I use for Security/Diagnostics to luck onto the DSLReports forum post.
It (Empty Device Manager) seems to also have Malware that removes
the System Privileges from the Enum Key - also blanks out the device
table. Not sure if it's from the same infector or something else.

And as the line goes from "A Hard Days Night" - "He's a Clean Old Man".
Most of my friends just call me Mac.

I hope that I may be permitted to call you "Mac" then. And just take the
compliment, OK? You did a great job of Sherlocking this one and you've
helped a whole lot of people by it.

Best regards,
