I have just install XP Pro and find that the device
manager fails, when attempting to start it I get the
message

"Unable to load the device manager program file,
devmgr.dll"

I have searched for the file and it is located in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

Any ideas on what may be the cause ?

Hi,

The file devmgr.dll must be located in c:\windows\system32 as well as in
c:\windows\system32\dllcache. I recommend you to expand this file from your
windows CD.
how to expand -->

If the problem persist, then reapply Service Pack 1a for Windows Xp. -->

Check If the pagefile is set and that you have enough disk space on your
local disk.

Hi, RJA.

This sounds like a job for...<tada!>...SFC!

The Windows File Protection system keeps a "known good" copy of each of the
WinXP operating system files in dllcache. After every Service Pack or other
update, the copy in dllcache is updated, too. Then, when something goes
wrong, we can use the System File Checker to fix the problem.

At the Run prompt, type: sfc /scannow

SFC will compare each WinXP file with the copy in dllcache and replace any
missing or damaged ones. Have your WinXP CD-ROM handy; SFC may need to see
that.

Hi Sebastjan

Thanks for your input, I tried all that you advised but it unfortunately did not solve the problem, actually it turned out being a missing or corrupt registry setting
devmgmt.msc > snap-in failed to initialize > CLSID.......etc
Anyway, I ended up formating the drive and reinstalling from CD again, unfortunately this took 4-5 attempts, I lost count, but it seems to be working now thankfully

Once again thank for your help

Hi, Robert.

Well, I'm glad you got the problem solved. A clean install from the CD is
the surest solution, and it is often the "best", especially if you don't
have a lot of applications already installed. If you do have apps and data
that you need or want to preserve, the "in-place upgrade" will reinstall
WinXP itself while preserving those. (See KB Article 315341 for details.)

No matter which method of install/reinstall you choose, be sure to install a
good firewall and antivirus protection. Then go to Windows Update to be
sure your system is protected from all the viruses and other malware out
there!
