Do they open when you type 'devmgmt.msc'( Device manager) and
'compmgmt.msc' (Computer management) in the searchbox?

Hello,
open and elevated CMD prompt ( right -click on cmd prompt and choose to run
elevated.
Make sure you are in c:\windows\system32 directory
Run dir mmc*.* and report back the results. Those last errors indicate an
issue with teh files.
Then try running sfc /scannow in that elevated cmd prompt.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hey Darrell,
Yes, I did run an sfc/scannow, in the location you suggested earlier, but
nothing has changed as far as this particular .exe error goes. I'll copy the
information from the error exactly after re-boot and post it back as well as
try to see what happens in the elevated CMD promt after running the mmc.exe.
Thanks... Fuzz

Ok Darrell,

This is what I get on the CMD prompt when I run mmc.exe

mmc.exe - Bad image

C:\Windows\system32\mmcbase.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or
it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original
installation media or contact your system administrator or the software
vendor for support.

Hope that is helpful... really looking to ditch this one.

Also...

This mmc.exe doesn't show up after re-boot... I get this other .exe error
after re-boot that is similar.

fsquirt.exe - Bad image

C:\Windows\System32\irprops.cpl is either not designed to run on Windows or
it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original
installation media or contact your system administrator or the software
vendor for support.

So... they are similar.. yet different.

Did you run sfc /scannow ?
While in this elevated CMD prompt can you run mmc.exe and see if will come
up?
If it doesn't can you capture the exact error string?
Thanks,

Darrell...

fsquirt is a file brought in by the Bluetooth software. After I purchased
my machine I was trying to make it compatible with my Cingular SYNC phone via
a Bluetooth USB adapter that wasn't designed for Vista and had to download
the driver via IOGear website, to download photos from my SYNC phone to the
Slimline.
Thanks.

Hey Darrell,
Had a chat with HP online help... they tried to open Device Manager via a
new user account. However, that failed and they suggest a System Recovery...
any other options?
Thanks Fuzz

Hello Fuzz,
Is this 32-bit or 64-bit?
can you check uxtheme.dll for me?
I am expecting it to be this
Date Time Size Name
11/02/2006 02:46 AM 240,640 uxtheme.dll

Did you install any languages by chance?
Everything is looking correct so far that we have looked at.
I know fsquirt.exe is a Bluetooth, It's File Squirt, we do ship it with the
OS as well

I am wondering now if another file was replaced in either Windows or
Windows\system32

run this
from c:\windows\ dir /od /a >win.txt
From c:\windows\system32\ dir /od /a >sys32.txt
this is listing the files sorted by date. Looking for OS files with dates
other than 11-02-2006
Can you capture those two files as well as the cbs.log file
c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log
compress them into a ZIP file and send to me.
Remove the online from the email address before sending.
(e-mail address removed)

Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

I know fsquirt.exe is a Bluetooth, It's File Squirt, we do ship it with the

run this
from c:\windows\ dir /od /a >win.txt
From c:\windows\system32\ dir /od /a >sys32.txt
this is listing the files sorted by date. Looking for OS files with dates

Can you capture those two files as well as the cbs.log file
c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log
compress them into a ZIP file and send to me.
Remove the online from the email address before sending.
