Device Manager, Defragment and ATI file player are just some of the programs that I have noticed that closes after only a few seconds after opening them, rendering then useless. It happened to me once before and I had to reinstall XP, but that was because my hard drive died on me. Does anyone have any ideas or help on this? I'd hate to have to reinstall XP again. I mean I'd hate to have to reinstall XP every 2 or 3 months.

There are trojan / viruses that are famous for causing these type of
problems. Download and run this free trojan detector. Jym

Thanks Jym, that got rid of w32/sdbot.worm.gen.n virus. But my programs are still behaving the same, closing a few secs after opening them. Do you have anymore advice?

Do a repair install. Jym

Thanks Jym. I tried the repair install, but I still have the same problem. Do you have any more ideas?

Once again Jym, thanks for all your help.

I've used a bunch off virus detectors and found all kinds of viruses, but none of them could remove them. The only one that could remove some of the viruses was Antivir. But the good news is that my programs are working now. Thanks a ton, this could buy me some more time. So not sure what to do now. I guess I'll have to live with the other viruses for now or do a reinstall of XP.

If a virus remover can detect a virus, should it not be able to remove it?

Do you have any other suggestons?

Progress is being made! First of all , viruses cannot be removed from
protected System Restore files. But to remove these you will need to turn
off System Restore , reboot and turn System Restore back on. If you have had
a virus move than a few days then the virus has been backed up in these
files . Other viruses can be removed by booting in to safe mode and manually
removing them from the location noted from the scan. Good Luck , Jym

Hay! Jym just wanted to thank you for all your help. I think I'm finaly virus free, as far as I can tell.
So just wanted to let you know you were very helpful, and to thank you again for all your help. Took me a while to find this post though.
