Device I/O error

I have a workbook that opens a series of Userforms. Just recently I get the
following message:

"Device I/O error "

Help tells me it may be a HD error or external problem. I can't work that
out as the HD seems to be OK and I've only got Excel open.
There are 3 Userforms but on clicking OK on the error message, 3 more error
boxes open and need to be closed.
The problem is not always there as when I tried to run the procedure a few
time in succesion, the error went away.
Any ideas?

Hi Rob,

could be corrupted temp files being reused by the forms.

try deeleting all temp files:

Run %Temp% to find them

then delete them
