I have a Dell Dimension 8250 with Windows XP Home SP1.

I am having difficulty installing plug and play devices. I recently bought an optical wheel mouse that sometimes loses its connection after boot up and the cursor just stays in the middle of the screen(and i hate that). To try and rectify the problem I bought a USB to PS/2 adapter but that didn't work at all. Today I got a joystick and now that won't detect at all, it is listed as an unknown device. The joystick is a Predator TH 400 and has no drivers as it is supposed to be installed by windows. I know the joystick is fine because I have tested it in another computer and it works fine.

I looked in device manager to see if there were any problems and when I clicked show hidden devices(under view) the non plug and play devices was expanded and the PartMgr had yellow exclamation mark next to it, with an error 24.

Could this be causing my problem or do I have more than one!

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

That is actually very strange that you mention that... I get the same "mouse freezing" problem sometimes (albeit not in the past week), and it has confused me somewhat too. I have a Dell 8300, which is very similar to your model. The only reason I never looked into it was because I got it so cheap from the net.

Is the Mouse origionally a USB mouse, or a PS2 mouse? I have a PS2 mouse in there at the moment. If you are using an adapter to convert the PS2 to USB, you may need to alter some settings in your BIOS (F2 on bootup).

Is your joystick USB or via a 15 pin D connector?

I have a similar problem with my home built system. I recently replaced the PS2 mouse with an optical wireless mouse (USB) and keyboard. Every so often, the mouse will freeze. I usually have to pull the pc out and unplug the mouse from the USB port, then plug it back in. Most of the time this will work. I can't check my Device Manager, since the mouse is frozen. Isn't this USB port freezing a common problem with USB? Seems like I've heard something very similar with printers plugged into USB...

The mouse is usb - I was hoping the ps/2 connector would solve the problem!
The joystick is also usb.
I am not having any problems though with my printer, scanner or modem which are usb as well!

are these devices ok in safe mode?

try downloading latest chipset drivers and check manufacturers website there are various patches about for various USB 2 compatablilty probs.

Also, are you up to date with Windows updates? There is a mouse compatibility fix among a recent batch.

UPDATE: After loads of research I found out that I didn't have a joystick controller so I had to manually install one I chose standard game port. I've got a step further now, under Human Interface Devices in device manager it now lists Generic game port device, HID compliant game controller and my usb mouse. In the game controllers in control panel, I have tried to manually add my joystick and it says the status is not connected. Any ideas anyone? (All drivers I could possibly find I have updated, I have even updated my bios)

I have given up and I'm selling the joystick and going for a Logitech WingMan Force 3D instead.

Thankyou for the help!

I have never ... and will never trust TRUST.

With Techy, cogent1, & Chris on you "case" I didn't need to add anything. However, it should have worked ... did you only get the "yellow exclamation mark" when the device was pluged in?
No need to answer if your going for the Logitech WingMan ... good choice, but let us know if it "solves your problem". :)
