Determining region for a DVD

Hiya, does anyone know if there's a way to determine what region your DVD is
before you play it? I bought one from Amazon that was listed as "All
regions," but it doesn't actually say "All regions" OR "Region 0" on the DVD
case.

The reason I'm wondering is, after playing it, I tried to play another DVD
that is listed as region 2 & 4, and got a message (this is in Windows Media
Player and I'm in the UK) that my player is set for region 1 and would I like
to change it??
How did my player end up being set at region 1?

For many years now DVD drive manufacturers have bowed to pressure
and market their hardware to lock to a region after 5 plays of DVD's from
a specific region. Your message dosen't imply the drive has "region locked"
but it maybe on the fifth play from a specific region, and may lock so you
have been given a choice.
If your drive does become "region locked" it is relatively easy to unlock
and make reasign desired region.

Not true - you don't get 5 plays and a lock. You get the lock when the
region is changed 5 times - then the drive must be returned to the
manufacturer for re-setting.
