detecting proxy settings

can anyone help, when I start ie it takes about 20 seconds to start
up.......and at the bottom l/h of the screen it says detecting proxy
settings

winxp home , broadband connection thro alcatel on freeserve.

Does Freeserve require a proxy setting? If not, uncheck that box where
it searches for them (believe it's either in Internet>Connection or LAN
properties - XP box isn't on just now).
