Detecting new devices

When trying to install new hardware, firstly the hardware
is not automatically detected by win XP, and when I try to
double-click on the add new hardware button, I get the
following error message, despite the fact I am not
installing any other devices:


'You can only install one device at a time
Another device installation is underway, when it is
finished you can try this wizard again.'

Any ideas on how to sort it?

XP will NOT automagically just see any new hardware you put it. Often
one has to install the drivers first accd. to the docs.
