Detecting malware in software and websites

I would like to download and install freeware to my pc.
Is there any way to tell if the software contains malware. Also, if the
site is a reputable site.

There are some tools (I think Firefox does and McAffee has an add-on) to tell
you the reputation of sites as you visit them.
As for telling if they have malware, you will need to download and scan it.
This doesn't guarentee the program won't still go off to the net and get
malware anyway.
