Detect OS Versions for Deployment of Apps.

How can I for example, detect the version of windows
installed on a client from a DOS prompt, (Win2K/WinXP) or
other, so I know when and which software patch to apply.

We are doing a deploy of a patch for our AutoCAD system
and I need to detect the OS so I can sucessfully copy
files in there logon script to there respective OS.
