Destop, Task Manager - problems, irus infection etc

Pc running Win XP prof seems to have a lot of problems and I do not mknow if
I have to post separately. The problem are:-
1/ My desktop background is set tp bliss and once I turn ovc,the desktop is
red in colour with a message asking to download (....something about my pc
been infested...) Alt/Ctlr/Del omly give me a small dialog box with "Task"
and "Status" option. There is no "process" " application" etc
The pc is real slow which I have just scan with my McAfee (updated) and
Ewindo.
I updated by pc which it has repeated downloading/installing BHTI (or
something like background intelligence check)
Please help how do I get rid of the vitrus etc.

This looks like some kind of spyware. Try to install microsoft windows defender and/or
spybot, then check your machine.

The red desktop message is usually made by a Winfixer type of malware.
Do the preparatory work here and follow instructions to do all scans in
Safe Mode:

After you remove the malware, the red desktop may remain. Get rid of it
this way:

Go to the Display applet in Control Panel and look on the Desktop tab.
Click on Customize Desktop, and then click on the Web tab. You will see
that there are checkmarks next to "My Current Home Page" and probably
"Lock Desktop Items". Uncheck these. By highlighting the "My Current
Home Page" and clicking on the Properties button, you will be able to
determine the name of the file that is the message. It might be called
something like "security.html" or the like.

Click Apply and OK out when you've made your changes. Then you want to
find the *.html malware file and delete it.
