I received a new laptop machine and was moving my old data to the new machine. Once completed I deleted my old files only to realize i did move over my *.pst file!!! This is a critical file for me as it contains over 200MB of critical client data. I downloaded several recovery tools (R-Studio and others) to try and find the data to no evail. Is there any way to recover my lost *.pst file. I noticed that my hiberfil.sys was still intact and the system went into hibernation before I deleted this file. Please help me I am desperate!!!

Look at EasyRecovery Professional on www.ontrack.com ($500.00). I have found
that it will consistently recover files that other programs do not even see.

Maybe you really DO get what you pay for!

it should be very easy to recover it from your backup disk, you do backup
your "critical client data" don't you?

I suppose I shouldn't ask why you didn't make sure your
files were successfully transferred to the new computer
before deleting them from the old computer.......

Testy, thanks for throwing gas on the fire. One would think after all the years I have in the technology business that I would know better. Well, I screwed up. It happens when you are pushing 14 hour weeks for five weeks in a row. My brain went out to lunch what else can I say....

I use Ontrack's Easy Recovery Pro which I like a lot. I believe they
have a trial version that will show you what you *could* recover if you
pay. No, I don't think you're going to get the data from hiberfil.sys.
If all else fails, this is a good job for DriveSavers -
www.drivesavers.com. Their US phone number is 800-440-1904. While their
services are not inexpensive, since your machine is operative I don't
believe it will be outrageously expensive to recover your data. I don't
work for them, but I have dealt with them in the past and they are
great.

Good luck,

Malke

FOURTEEN hour weeks?! That's 2 hours and 48 minutes a day. You seriously
expect us to believe that you cannot remember to back up because you're
working less than three hours a day?! How much do you get paid for these 2
hours and 48 minutes and does it include breaks?!

Where did you do the deleting from - the old machine or the new machine.
If you deleted the old files from the old machine and didn't empty the
recycle bin, the file should still be in the recycle bin. If you deleted
the old files from the new pc - they would not have went to the RC (Since it
would be considered a remote network mapped drive) or if you have emptied
the recycle bin, an no write activities have overwritten the clusters the
file resides on, then a good recovery software should be able to recover -
but beware, get one you can run from floppy or cd, as you don't want to
install anything new, that creates a write function on the old PC, or the
new software could overwrite a cluster of the old file - as it has been
tagged as freespace.
Also note, Outlook normally stores a backup of its own pst file,
provided you have downloaded the addin and enabled it - the default is
"Outlook.bkp" - I put mine on my PC, where the primary is on the network
backup drives.
Nonetheless, you should also setup a scheduled backup routine to backup
important files (no necessarily Windows and Apps), like you mailbox,
addresses, documents and other related data files.

Well, at least you learned that some people on these groups have a sense of
humor. :)

Depending on just how important these files are, it's going to cost you some
money. Malke probably gave you the pointer to the best resource for
recovery. My company has used Drive Savers a few times and they are really
good. One other tip is to keep from doing anything with the laptop until the
files can be recovered. The more it is used, the less chance you have of
recovering those files.

Hiberfil.sys will probably not help - it is the contents of your computer's
memory (RAM) when it went into hibernation, not of any files that are
elsewhere on your hard drive. If some program just happened to have the
contents of your entire outlook.pst in memory (very unlikely) when it went
into hibernation, and you knew how to decipher the binary data that is in it
(after figuring out how to actually find it among everything else that was in
memory), it may be possible to pull something out of there, but it is
extremely doubtful.
