Desktp Shortcuts - automatic renaming?

Having a debate here with colleagues: when I create
shorcuts to my desktop I always rename immediately to
remove the "Shortcut to" text [e.g. I rename "Shortcut to
Reports" to "Reports"] becaise it is obvious from the
icon that it is a shortcut.

Now after doing this many times it seems that Windows has
learned that I do this and now creates shortcuts
automatically without the "Shortcut to" text.

My colleagues claim this is very unlikely and that I must
have changed something.

TweakUI allows you to enable or disable the "Shortcut To" prefix

TweakUI v2.00 for Windows XP/XP MCE [564 KB].

In Win95, there was supposedly a registry key that kept track of this:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\link
This key is also present in XP, although I can't verify its function. In
95, it was reset at every logon, limiting its usefulness. So, yes, perhaps
XP is remembering, I wouldn't be suprised.

This is a feature of XP.
If you create 3 (?) shortcuts and remove the "Shortcut to", it will not be
added to new shortcuts.

Prefix "Shortcut to" on new shortcuts

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Value Name: Link
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = None
1 = Shortcut to

No - it does learn in this way, but slowly! It is also one of the
settings you can handle with the invaluable TweakUI - one of the XP
Powertoys from (if you have installed XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Explorer page has a box 'Prefix Shortcut to. . .' which you uncheck;
and its Explorer - Shortcut page allows you to change the arrow used - a
light arrow is much less intrusive but does still point out that it *is*
a shortcut

three times I tried it
in win xp prof xp2
did not work

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\link
this did not work either

Prefix "Shortcut to" on new shortcuts

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Value Name: Link
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = None
1 = Shortcut to
