desktop takes over 5min to load

i recently reformatted my hard drive, i installed all the service packs
updates etc, ran virus checker, spy checker, defragged but the computer still
takes 5 min or longer to show icons on desktop. i can click the start button
but wont let me open anything from there until the desktop appears. the only
new prog i installed was ie7.
i am getting very frustrated so need help. thanks

So where along the way did it start to manifest this 5 min load? After some
particular software was installed or an update applied? What changes were
made right before the problem started?

Without knowing any more you could start with some clean boot

Try removing ie7
 
i uninstalled ie 7, still hanging

i did the manual steps for clean boot. got to #7 and was putting load
startup items back and it hangs up again. i cant see where a service is
causing the problem. i cant tell which one is the offending one. however
with the first part of the instruction it caused the icons not to respond to
left clicking and only would respond to a right click with some hesitation.
i would like to reformat (again) and get rid of the problem. i also
uninstalled the ie7. no difference with ie6 or ie7.
i uninstalled ie 7, still hanging

Try removing ie7

You perhaps have too many (or too bulky) 'spy checking', 'virus checking'
tools installed for your particular hardware. These can also consume large
portions of your memory. If so, try uninstalling them and looking for
lighter weight alternatives.

Use the principle of halves. Disable have the items, see if it solves the
problem. If so halve it again. If not disable the other have, etc. Keep
going until you have it identified. You have to be very precise in doing
this.

Be careful about disabling microsoft services through msconfig. It could
render the system not bootable, as a recent post to this newsgroup showed.
Work on non MS services.

I'm not saying clean boot troubleshooting will identify the problem but if
it doesn't have a problem booting into safe mode, then this should work.

Geez, that should read, "disable half the items", not "disable have the
items", and disable the other half", not "the other have."

You uncheck and check individual items in the startup section.
