Desktop sharing

Hi all, I have seen this done but dont know how.

My parents live far away and are not that computer savy. Trying to get them
to do things over the phone is a nightmare! I would like to be able to take
over control of their desktop so that I can show them how to do certain
things on their laptop. I would prefer not to have to install anything on
their laptop prior to this. I'm sure I have had it done to myself where I am
sent a message and upon clicking "ok" it has given someone the ability to
remotely use my computer. I would like to know how to do this with a no
frills lightweight solution.

Any help appreciated.

I do exactly the same thing with my mother (92!) and a number of my clients.
I use WinVNC, which is free for private use, and I use it in reverse mode so
that my clients initiate the remote session by double-clicking a shortcut.
When they do then their screen appears on my screen and I can use their
keyboard and mouse. They can see at all times what's going on.

Installation at your parents' end is trivial. At your end it is more
involved and
requires the following steps:
- Register a free domain name, e.g. brendanxxx.homedns.org.
- Install a service on your PC that links your external IP address with
brendanxxx.homedns.org. Alternatively, use the corresponding function
that may be built into your modem/router. Alternatively, use your fixed
external IP address if you have one.
- Adjust your firewall to pass packets on port 5500.
- Use a fixed internal IP address.
- Create a rule on your router that forwards port 5500 packets to your
fixed internal IP address.
- Install WinVNC.

Dear Brendan,

There is one very simple program called "TeamViewer" each one is perfect for
you needs. There is a free vesion, and it's work even between diferent
networks (incouding routers, firewalls, ...)

You and your parents heed to download the aplication form the site and to
start it. You and your parent will recive a ID and a Password (in blue tabs).
Your parent will tell you their IP and Pass and you can connect to theyr
desktop.

For zero configuration I am partial to Ammyy Admin, very easy to use.

otherwise as stated in earlier thread I like WinVnc as well. Just look up
how to configure single click on your end if you do want to use WinVnc.
