desktop problem

Hi

I have the following problem: When I start XP there are no icons nor start menu on the desktop... just the background... later I figured out it's an explorer.exe problem becouse when I open Task Manager and end explorer.exe process, and than go to New Task, type in explorer... everything appears... what could be the problem?... how do I fix it

Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll down to
Item No. 195 (right column), click on "Restore Desktop Icons and
Taskbar".

Install the registry fix, then reboot your computer.

Tried this tweak and I got an error message:
"The service cannot be started either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it"

Re-tried this and did get it too install. Still no desktop icons or start bar. Any other ideas

Did yopu try right clicking the desktop---arrange icons by---show desktop
icons????
