Every time I start-up windows XP prof. desktop blacks out
for a moment, then the desktop colors are all wrong,
when I right click on 'properties' then 'settings'
colour quality shows 'Lowest 8 bit' when should
be 'highest 32 bit' I click on this, and click 'Apply'
and 'OK' which puts everything correct again, until
next time I shut-down and start-up!? Please can anyone
tell me what I can do to correct this?

At the Settings tab, select "Advanced".
Then select the "Adapter" tab and then select "List Modes".

Find a suitable desktop resolution and highest color bit
choice, then make sure the refresh rate agrees with your
monitor. Now apply that setting.

Reboot and test.

One other option would be to update your video driver(s).
Be sure to uninstall any existing and reboot first. Then
reinstall existing or use a new downloaded driver from
your video card's manufacturer's website.

Good luck!
