Desktop.ini is blank

Hello;
Windows XP Home, all the latest Win Updates.

What should my C:\WINDOWS\Desktop.ini have in it? Mine is blank. So is
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Desktop.ini. I think because one or both of these are blank,
My Pictures and My Music folders do not appear correctly. I found an article
addressing what My Pictures and My Music Desktop.ini's should contain, but not
C:\WINDOWS\Desktop.ini or C:\WINDOWS\system32\Desktop.ini.

My Pictures and My Music have the generic manila folder. The Customize tab
is missing from both folders: right click/Properties. I'm not trying to
customize them, I just want to get them back to original. The strange thing is
that I have copies of My Pictures and My Music on a CD and they both appear
correctly there.

I screwed around a good portion of the day trying to fix these files.
Searching the web and trying different things. I created a new My Pictures and
My Music and deleted the old ones after copying and pasting the contents over to
the new folders. I should have done that in the first place. :o)

Two problems still remain, the empty Desktop.ini files for:
C:\WINDOWS\Desktop.ini and C:\WINDOWS\system32\Desktop.ini.

From Msinfo32 Startup Programs:
desktop | desktop.ini | NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM | Startup
desktop | desktop.ini | .DEFAULT | Startup

I have no idea which desktop.ini's these are. Are these related?

I am all ears for any suggestions.

The Windows desktop ini is blank and has a date of 2001

Using a text editor (Notepad) edit the .ini file to look like

Thank you for your reply. There is no accounting for taste. I was trying
to fix these folders. Yesterday I saw a post from someone wanting to know how to
get rid of them. :o)

As I mentioned, I did all the stuff from Kelly's. I thought Douglas Thrift
had taken ownership of my machine. Just kidding. ;o) I have these folders
repaired to my satisfaction. Interesting to note that your WINDOWS\Desktop.ini
is blank and dated 2001. My XP was installed on Aug 12, 2003 as SP1. I'm not
going to worry about mine being blank now that I know someone else's is blank,
probably has some thing to do with how the Desktop itself is customized.
I don't Logon and off, I Shutdown and Start. Well, technically I do;
Autologon. And I did reboot.
The link you included to shell objects is very interesting. Thanks.

If you down load the shell object editor that is linked within the article
on http://www.virtualplastic.net/html/ui_shell.html then you could make one
or another of your folders to be a 'hard' short cut like My Documents.

The only way I could get any that I made to expand out the contents in a
taskbar menu was to place it at the very top of the Start Menu.

It just occurred to me (slap forehead now) why there is a Desktop.ini for
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup!!! I've got a
custom icon of some keys instead of that UGLY default manilla folder w/a bingo
card in front of it.

You have desktop.ini because it where it gets it's localised name from - Startup in the english language and whatever in whatever language. The folder stays as Startup but lies about it's name depending on language version. In english language the lie is the same as the folder name but you are seeing the lie not the folder name. One place in english where the lie is different to the real name is Shared Documents whose real name is just Documents.

Plus what you said as well. Custom icons are stored in these files too.

Type in Start - Run
%allusersprofile%

Note the name shared documents. Open it and move the desktop.ini somewhere. Go back to
%allusersprofile%\ and it should say just Documents. This is it's true name. Shared Documents is the name that only english XP users see. Other language see different things but the real name dooesn't change.

I don't have any Shared folders except the default Shared Music and Shared
Pictures.
I tried this with Shared Pictures, moved the Desktop.ini and re-opened the file.
The name had been changed to My Pictures. :o) I do see how the
LocalizedResourceName works, thanks to this demo.
I also realized that I could have used TweakUI to fix my screwed up folders.

Thanks for the reply. ;o) Well, I'm not worrying about it now, since
they work to my satisfaction. I was probably doing something wrong,
before I fixed things my own way.

It just occurred to me (slap forehead now) why there is a Desktop.ini for
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup!!! I've
got a custom icon of some keys instead of that UGLY default manilla
folder w/a bingo card in front of it.
