desktop icons

Can anyone please help. I have several icons on my desktop with the name of the folder underneath. I used to have just writing now I have a bit block of bold colour which is annoying. How do I get rid of this. Thanks. Lynn

Right click on my computer, choose properties, go to Advanced options,
click on performance.
Check: 'use shadows on the desktop icons'
