I have a Dell 9300 Inspiron laptop,Windows xp home, all software up to date.
My desktop icons regenerate themselves numerous times.

My question is why does this happen and is there a solution??

Thanks.

Specifically which icons ? - My Computer, My Documents or
others. When does the regenerated icons appear - at login ?

They all vanish then regenerate themselves.

Sounds like explorer restarting itself and the desktop refreshes. You
have any other malware problems?

Are the icons actually missing and then appear - this would be the exact
meaning of "regenerate" or do they constantly redraw themselves?

If the former, then disable any third-party theming programs, check for
malware, and see what is running in the background.

If the latter, see this from MVP Kelly Theriot:

and folder refresh, Line 157
