I hope somebody can help me.

I had a program freeze up on me the other day, and I had to resort to a
reset to get out of it.

Ever since, I've had the following symptoms:

* my desktop links for the most part don't work. folders won't open. icons
won't start their programs. the exceptions are IE and OE.
* i can't get into the control panel, and "my computer" and "my network"
won't allow me in.
* i can start most programs from the menu, and most run okay, except
sometimes when I try to use a link the system again freezes.
* when exiting the program, neither explorer nor my webroot utility will
close on their own...I have to manually "end" them.

I went back to a system restore from a two-day earlier control point (before
the crash) and it hasn't seemed to help.

I just tried to use desktop cleanup and it wiped out all my desktop links
except those I have created since the crash, despit my checkmarks to save
them.

Can somebody give me a clue whether I can salvage this. It seems to me that
"explorer" is horked, or that some section of the registry or some other
file that tracks the links is horked, but I can't understand if that is the
case why the system restore wouldn't work.

I do have a complete copy of the hard drive, including a system restore
option, saved in Roxio backup from about six months ago...I am loath to use
it, however, untill I've tried everything else since it will wipe out all my
email during that six months.

I look forward to your knowledge and suggestions. Anybody had/solved a
similar problem?

Since I haven't had a reply to the below, thought I'd try to describe it
more succinctly in subject line.

Please post a copy of the Error / Warning Reports as they appear in
System / Application logs in Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report.
Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

I can't access the contorl panel. Or "My Computer". Or "Network
Neighborhood" Or any folder on the desktop. I double clear, I get the
"wait" hourglass for about three seconds and then it disappears. Nothing
happens...even if I let it sit an hour. No disk activity. Nothing.

So I can't use the control panel to use the event viewer. Could it be
started from a command line, after using my CD of Windows?

Hi Harry,

I had the exact same problem in September. Finally I fixed the problem by
downloading and reinstalling either Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer
(sorry I can't remember which). I think you should try Windows Explorer first
as that makes more sense considering the nature of the problem.

Good luck!
