Today my desktop icons developed backgrounds behind the words. For example
"My Documents" instead of just being words on the screen is now in a
rectangular box. The color of the text box can be changed by changing the
desktop themes but I can't turn it off.

Thanks

Jeff

Try this. Right click My Computer, Click Properties, Click Advanced
Click Performance Settings, Scroll down and put a checkmark next to Us
drop shadows for incon lables on desktop. Should get rid of the box

Hi Jeff423,

Right-click on My Computer, select Properties, Advanced tab, Settings button
in Performance section, under Visual Effects tab scroll down and click in
the checkbox beside "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" to
check it, then Apply then OK and OK again.

Right-click a blank area of the Desktop, then select Arrange Icons by and
click to uncheck "Lock Web Items on Desktop".

Regards,

It worked, thanks!

I've got the same problem and i've already tried everything said here and
the icons still highlighted. They turned like that when i was trying to take
a picture from Word to the desktop. I've even treid to restore the system
using three different dates and it tells me that it cannot be done since
there are no changes (which is untrue).

Try these steps to solve the drop shadow issue around the desktop icons,

1. Right-click on the Desktop and select "Arrange by Icons" then UNCHECK
"Lock Web Items on Desktop". If "Lock Web Items on Desktop" is UNCHECKED
then CHECK it and then UNCHECK it.

2. Go to the Control Panel then System Properties, then the Advance tab,
then the Performance button. Locate and enable (place a check mark) "Use
drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop". If this item is already enable
(checked) then uncheck and click APPLY. Now re-check the item and click
apply.

Desktop icons and icon labels may not display background transparency or the
drop shadow effect in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP

Same problem here too. After restoring my all my background image options,
under the Desktop tab, my icons developed boxed backgrounds. I've tried
everything said here still won't work. Hope someone can fix this problem fast
because those boxes are starting to get annoying.

There are four settings that can effect this behavior, all four must be configured for transparent icon background to work properly.

1. Go to Control Panel / System / Advanced Tab / Performance Section / Settings Button / Visual Effects Tab. Make sure that "use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" is checked.

2. Right click the Desktop and select Arrange Icons by and make sure that "Lock Web items on desktop" is NOT checked.

3. Make sure that there is no live web content on the desktop. Right click the desktop and select Properties / Desktop Tab / Customize Desktop Button / Web Tab. Make sure that all checkboxes are cleared.

4. If you are using a desktop wallpaper, make sure that it is an image file (.jpg, .bmp, etc) and not an HTML (.htm) file.
