Desktop Icons appearing slower

I have noticed sometime in the past week on starting up my machine after the
Welcome screen the icons on my desktop don't appear all at the same time.
There is not a big delay by any means but it is noticeable to you that they
are not instant anymore. Is there anything I should be looking at with
regard to this. They just seem to flash momentarily first when swapping and
when closing down the screen flickers before closing down.

Can you help me by directing me as to where I would check what is actually
starting up when I power up my machine please.

Lynn, click on the START icon on the lower left of the screen, When
the window pops up click on RUN. The next window to come up should say
RUN, and the default in the box should say "msconfig."
If the default doesn't say "msconfig", just type it in and click on
OK.
A "SYSTEN CONFIGURATION UTILITY" box will pop up. Click on the
"STARTUP" tab on the far right. You will now see all the programs that
start up when you log on.
Uncheck any boxes next to the programs you don't need to start up when
you log on.
When finished unchecking those programs, click on "APPLY".
You will have to reboot in order for these changes to take affect.

Thanks for replying, the trouble is that unlike my other PC running W98 I
don't know what is necessary to start up for XP. I know I need ZA and AV on
startup but I have no idea what the other stuff it's listing is?!
