Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the right newsgroup but I have an odd question. Is
it possible for adware or any web based "junk" to be loaded onto a computer
when it is shutdown. My DSL line was still turned but the computer system
was off. The event viewer showed an ad pop-up in the middle of the night.
I have the newest version of spybot (updated) AdAware with updates and
McAfee (all updated). This did not cause any real problems on my system but
make me wonder.

Thanks for Your Response In Advance

I think you're a little confused on terminology. Windows' Event Viewer
doesn't show pop-up ads, or any other kind of ad for that matter.

It can take less than a second for adware that was previously installed on
your computer to fetch new ads from the Internet. This can easily happen as
you are turning your computer on in the morning.

Another possibility is that your computer is not really turned off when you
think it is. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced tab and see what
is set to happen 'When I press the power button on my computer'.

You may also have what is known as 'Wake on LAN' enabled in your BIOS; this
allows a network (the Internet, for example) to activate your computer
(unless you pull the computer's power plug out of its socket.)

Rocket,

Thanks for your response. In the event viewer at approx. 1a.m. in the
applications area it showed a popup app had started. That was the only
thing I could find. I appreciate the answer. I believe that the wake on
LAN is enabled in the BIOS.

Thanks Again

Hi Parker,

Thank you for posting!

I also agree. When you shut down your computer, all Windows application
should not work any more. The only possible cause is the configuration in
BIOS settings.

Please consult your manufacture to disable wake on LAN, automatic boot
settings and any other configuration like these to prevent your computer
from starting at night.

I hope that the information is helpful.

Have a nice day!
