Where is the setting in Windows XP that controls the
transition effect that shows a phantom icon when you
drag an icon to a different location on the desktop? Also
how do you turn the desktop hidden grid on and off so
icons can snap to the grid? Tried the Effects tab of
desktop display properties to Show Windows Content... but
it doesn't do anything to the icons on the desktop.

Don't recall a control for the icons.

As for the grid, right-click the Desktop, select Arrange
Icons By, then toggle the Align to Grid feature on and off
with a check-mark.

Thanks for the reply. I run Windows 2000 Professional on
my PC and am assisting a friend who has XP on his new
laptop. Will try your suggestion when next I see him.

Do you have the latest video driver from your video card maker installed?
The "ghost icons" use alpha blending and may not show up if you've got video
acceleration turned down (Display Properties \ Settings tab \ Advanced
button \ Troubleshoot tab).

Don't know. Am assisting a friend who has a new laptop
with XP Home and Office 2003. Is a flat panel display vs.
a CRT a factor? Next time I see him, I'll try your
suggestion. Thanks.
