As the Excel file is buried several directories/folders deep in a
network drive (P: in my network neighborhood), I was trying to create
desktop shortcut icon so that I can open the network file directly by
clicking the icon.

But the icon properity indicates actually the icon file is pointed to
a file in my C:\.. etc. Any changes I made to that file (icon) is not
reflected in original file located in the the Netowrk drive. As the
result, I need to re-save the changed file into the original network
drive by laboriously going thru the network directories/folders etc.

Is it possible to do what I want? How?

I'm not sure how you created the shortcut, but it sounds like you copied the
file--and you didn't create the shortcut.

Open Windows explorer
traverse to the folder on the P: drive.
Rightclick on your .xls file and select
"Send to"
Then
Desktop (as shortcut)

Then check the properties for that new icon.
