After trying to upgrade a video card, I have found that XP won't open to my desktop. I thought it was because of disablling the vidcard, but in F1 I restored all settings.

In safe mode if I pick "start Normally" I get the flag, but when the desktop should open, nothing but black. All hardware diags show to be Ok. If I start in safe mode, a list of drivers (DOS style) show up and then freeze.

I really don't want to do a system restore (F11) but I cannot get to any XP windows

Boot your PC up with the Win XP CD. After the installation process has started, click on "R" to access the Recovery Console. Log on to Windows (Have to use the "Administrator" account.), and you should be able to fix your problems from here.

My PC is an IBM Netvista, which believe it or not , did not come with a WXP CD! IBM's answer is to put XP in F11, which requires a HD reformat.

Do you think I could borrow a friend's to make this work? Will this process dump all of our installed programs/files?
Thanks,
MC

Don't even try it. Your best bet by far is to follow IBM's procedure. But
getting back to basics, why do you wish to reinstall? Problem?
