I opened a zipped file (AleRules.exe)to my desktop and
now I have all these files all over my desktop, no matter
how many times I delete them, when I log on they are all
back. Is this an important file and how can I get these
off my desktop ?

Try this:
Start<>Progams<>Accessories<>System Tools<>Windows Explorer
Left click on desktop. Left click on file in left corner<>New<>Folder. When you have the new folder give it a name.
Go back to your desk top and the new folder should be there. Drag all the files into the new folder, then reboot. If they stayed there, open Windows explorer again<>left click desktop<>on the right side of the screen you should see that folder<>drag it to My Documents on the left side of the screen. Close down<>reboot<>should be all gone.{I hope}

Worked just fine no need to hope...Thanks.
