When I leave my PC running it tends to freeze all and requires
rebooting. I have not, to my knowledge, activated "hibernation" etc. I
use no screensaver. I would appreciate any and all help. Thanks in
advance.

Besides Hibernation/Standby - there are other options such as a
timer for turning off disk drives. How are those options setup on
your PC. Also, by default XP will put USB root hubs to sleep &
if you have USB mice or keyboards that may be part of your issue.

Thank you for your prompt reply, R McCarty. Could you steer me in the
direction of how to check on those settings you mentioned? I do have a
USB hub but normal mouse and keyboard. I have an external hard drive if
that would have any effect on my problem?
TIA

Open Control Panel ( Toggle view to Classic View). Then open up the
Power Options Applet. The power schemes defaults to "Home/Office
Desk". Look below in the 2nd half of the window to find the individual
options for monitor/hard drives.
To check/modify USB power options, use the System Applet in Control
Panel. When the details box opens, click the Hardware (TAB) and then
the Device Manager button. From the category tree view, click the +
besides Universal Serial Bus Controllers. One at a time, open each USB
Root Hub entry. When the details box opens, click "Power Management"
(TAB). Uncheck/Untic "Allow the Computer to turn off this device to
save Power" - click OK & repeat for the next Hub.
