The only background available is color. How can I again display pictures,
etc.?

You need to provide more information? What happens when you try to set an
image file as the background? What is the malware status of the computer
and how do you check that? Has it ever worked? What changed between the
time it did and when it didn't? Review this link below and resubmit with
more info.

All of the pictures available for background selection that came with the
computer now display the Kodak Easyshare icon and are greyed out. When I go
to my pictures folder and select a new picture for background, nothing
happens. This first happened when my son attempted to load one of his
pictures for background and he said "suddenly everything went blue". Now the
background is white. He insists he didn't load any new software, but he and
I use different digital cameras and software. I don't know what malware is.
When I restart my computer, the old background picture will flash briefly.
Thank you for your help.

Malware is an umbrella term that applies to all the nasties that can infect
a computer - viruses, Trojans, spyware, adware, etc. You should have a
recent AV program with up to date definitions, a firewall, and several non
viral anti-malware programs. Scans for malware should be done regularly in
safe mode. Here are some links for dealing with malware.

Have you tried a system restore to before the problem occurred?

Problem now fixed by using Morpheus suggestion of going to Registry Editor,
location
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\POLICIES\EXPLORER
and deleting all listings except Default and NoDriveTypeAutoRun. Thank you
for your quick reply and will check those websites.
