My background on Windows XP Home does not go to any picture but a series of
about 3cm thick dark and light grey horizontal stripes. I have tried to set
it back to the original settings but the picture appears briefly for about 1
second and then reverts back to the grey stripes. How to I reverts to the
original settings.

What changes occurred to the system right before this happened? Any new
software installed or hardware? An update from windows update? What is the
malware status of the computer?

Without knowing more try a system restore to a date right before the problem
happened. From Start | Help and Support click on System Restore in the menu
line.
 
download the newest video drivers for your graphics card...in device
manager uninstall the graphics driver files and reboot and when
windows tries to install the new found hardware link the wizard to
the new downloaded drivers to install.
