Desktop and toolbar lost

I downloaded an update from MS and when I rebooted I still had my wallpaper but mu start button, toolbar, and all of the shortcuts I had on the desktop are gone. I can still get to the folders a back way so they are still there, but I want my desktop back. I have tried reloading Windows XP but no help. Could someone please help?
