Deskside Super Computers (Clusters)

http://www.top500.org/

OK movers and shakers, can second hand
SuperComputers be useful for home users, used
machines are often thrown out or auctioned in batch lots.

The new Tyan Typhoon PSC (B2881) cluster servers are
now becoming popular, as the old dinosaurs are being
discarded.

http://www.tyan.com/products/html/clusterservers.html

It will run Linus OS and Windows CCS2003, what about
MS Vista (x64) anyway to make that run on a Typhoon
with eight AMD Opteronâ„¢ HE CPU processors w/ direct
connect and 64GB RAM. ?

For a home user to stream his ownTV station for
example.

Build your own SuperComputer.

Short of cash, build your own SuperComputer, zero cost
parallel computing.

http://stonesoup.esd.ornl.gov/

On council clean-up day, just collect a 1,000 of those old
1Ghz machines that everyone throws out, and you have a
free SuperComputer.

Hey you may not reach a Linpack benchmark
performance of 280.6 TFlop/s (“teraflops†or trillions of
calculations per second) but what do you expect for free.

Remember Blue Gene/L and his cousin Purple probably
have 131,000 odd CPU's each., so with only 1,000
CPU's your free SuperComputer will be Super in name
only, but probably better than the guy next door's.

Also at some auctions of old surplus business
computers you can get bargains like a single lot number
(must buy all) of 5,000 desktops for $5,000, great for
computer clubs.

Why are you posting this here? I looked at your first post and was going to
mark it as spam but then thought perhaps you were asking a question about
using Windows XP for cluster computing. This second post confirms that you
are not asking a question about the Windows XP operating system and are
therefore posting in the wrong place.

I still think it's spam, but maybe you just didn't know any better. If you
are really trying to find out information about cluster computer, use
Google.

Stop picking on me you bully, go chase some of the
regular spammers.

Often at computer auctions there are lots that are
superceeded desktops, and even other machines,
almost in SuperComputer class being sold as-is.

Would second hand SuperComputers be useful for
home users, what OS can you load on them besides
Windows CCS2003, can they run XP Pro x64 or Vista
x64. They usually have powerful Unix or Linux Server
software on them.

Word is that Windows Servers are crap, they need to be
nursed, as they are very unstable, and crash a lot.

I now understand that on machines like Tyan Typhoon
PSC (B2881) cluster servers running Unix or Linux you
should not try to run desktop OS's like XP or Vista.

Could such machines be used to run a 24/7 video
streaming server, streaming in Real, QT or Flash
(subject to Adobe rights) say instead of WMV, for a
home user, and confirm that Windows OS software on
those machines is useless.

It was just a suggestion to use discarded computers
from council clean up day, as they only go to land fill,
that's an enviromental spam message that MS does not
want on its newsgroup, tuff.

I hardly think I'm a bully, but I can't imagine why you think you can spam
freely without someone calling you on it. So, you are an irregular spammer
and somehow that's OK. No.

What you were trying to ask or do was unclear. If you weren't spamming, then
you certainly had the opportunity to come back with an explanation of why
you posted here. Naturally, you remain true to your nasty self and instead
of answering with clarification resorted to insults.

However, since you've now actually asked a question (even though it has only
marginally to do with Windows XP), I'll answer you:

No. "Super Computers" - Sparcs, Crays(!), Alphas, Proliants, Silicon
Graphics boxen etc. have different hardware and different processor
architectures than are supported by Microsoft Windows. They run the
operating systems which were designed to run on them. A simple Google for
"super computers" would have given you the information you claim to seek.
Since you are obviously too lazy to type those two words into a Google
search, here is a link which will explain the basics to you:

No.

and confirm that Windows OS software on
those machines is useless.

Any operating system not designed for the machine would be "useless", not
just Windows XP.

And if you want to understand about the special requirements of clustering -
which frankly you don't have the technical chops to do based on your posts
- then here's a start in learning about it. Interestingly enough, Microsoft
does have a Compute Cluster Server 2003 available but I very much doubt
using it is in your league.

The only reason I don't killfile you is because you are nasty and dangerous
and you need to be watched. If you want to think that's bullying, fine by
me. I really don't care what you think. Don't bother to troll back to this
unless you have a legitimate question because I don't answer trolls.

Oh dear what a lot of effort to finally get an answer from
two arrogrant MVP pricks !

"My reputation" and "nasty self " really is that how I come
across, well I never, I just can't stand professional fools,
that refuse to provide accurate answers to the public.

Ofcourse the public are always going to ask stupid
questions, just get over it, there is no need for your
abusive consending know all attitude.

That right MVP's just abuse the public, you know we
can't do anythink about your abusive condescending
attitude, I assume MVP's are not employees of MS. You
two are a disgrace to other MVP's that really try to help
the public.

I have no interest in computers, I just have to use the
dam machines, and the Windows ones are really crap,
and trying to get any assistance from you arrogant
MVP's is hopeless.

I now know why at auctions some computer gear is so
cheap, it is highly specialised, and not suitable for home
use, but of course thats not what the auction people
always tell the public.

I looked up what "troll' means, but I am still not too sure
what it means in your abusive context, I assume it some
type of futher insult, you two are really too abusive for
words.

"Troll"
'(Scandanavian folklore) a supernatural creature (either
a dwarf or a giant) that is supposed to live in caves or in
the mountains"

"A partsong in which voices follow each other; one voice
starts and others join in one after another until all are
singing different parts of the song at the same time"

'he used a spinner as his troll"

"Angling by drawing a baited line through the water"

also "spam" its got something to do with bulk emails.

'Unwanted e-mail (usually of a commercial nature sent
out in bulk)'

For what use most old drives are the simplest wiping software is a 4 pound
hammer, all our company PCs were stripped of hard drives and the hard drives
treated with the above "Software" before being thrown on the pile.
