Are there any sites, books or other info which give descriptions to the
processes running on my computer. Some of them are pretty self-explanatory
but others are not such as svchost etc.

As implied written for XP but almost everything there applies Windows 2000.

Check the Task List.

Appendix A - Purpose of Windows 2000 Services

Glossary of Windows 2000 Services

There are other Microsoft pages that list Windows 2000 default services
but I can't find any now, perhaps you will have better results with your
search: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/default.mspx

Finally, you can always to a search on the internet for the process and
you should get much information.
