Hi All,

We are about to replace all our hardware - 15 servers / 150
workstations / 15 notebooks

We have similar spec'd quotes from Dell and HP .

Does one perform better than the other?
Is one less reliable?
Which is percieved as the better quality brand?

Any experience or advice regarding this would be really helpful...

Thanks,

David Henderson.

Wopkstations: Neither! Each will be delivered with a flavour (Home/Pro) of
XP which is OEM. You may/may not get a "true" XP install CD.

Servers: I would "steer clear" of Dell. Their servers may not be consitant
in quality ans the standard drivers may not always work.

You will making a buy of a size that allows you to do some
negotiating for service, support and software. You set the
contract. You need a purchasing agent/lawyer if you don't
have the skill. You get what you want, order and pay for.

But government sees it as an obstacle to be overcome.

| My advice is for you to read the reviews. Use Google to
find some.

Greetings --

HP's servers have proven reasonably reliable in the past, but I
certainly wouldn't trust any business-essential/critical roles to
their laptops or desktops. Dell is far and away the better choice for
workstations.

You have to be much more specific than asking, overall, who is better, Dell
or HP?

And you are going to make a critical, long-range business decision based
upon the un-documented opinions of strangers (at least some of whom are
rational) encountered in a newsgroup?

Is your organization in the habit of making critical, long-range business
decisions based on answers obtained from the Magic 8-Ball?

Dell is primarily a marketing operation, HP is primarily a
technology company . . .

Correction: HP is primarily a *printer* company. Haven't seen much
technology come out of there in years.

If I had to make a choice for workstations, Dell would be it. HP PC
products seem to be routinely underpowered, minimal memory, cheap
components. As a repair company, 80% of the machines we see are HP's.
I think I've worked one one Dell in the last 6 months.

True, but in the volume they are going to buy, Dell support will a problem.
Phone calls to India is just the "tip of the iceberg".

Phone calls to India are only a problem for home system users--Dell
business/corporate system users get the traditional U.S.A. based support.

Greetings --

Not necessarily. Government support is also sometimes routed to
India. But it hasn't been a problem, yet. I just tell them what's
wrong with the computer and which part to send me.
