deleting unopened mail

How do you delete mail without opening it? The minute I highlight a message
it opens. Sometimes I want to forward mail without opening it, or delete it
without opening it. Thanks for any help.
 
Try closing your preview pain, there is an icon for it next to contacts and
calender.

I am having trouble deleting unopened mail also. I can not find the preview
pain.
