Deleting text

I am trying to complete a pro forma document and need to delete shaded boxes to insert text. I have transferred this document from Windows XP into 2003 and these shaded boxes have reappeared having been deleted in the previous version. How can I delete them please?
 
It sounds as if the document you are filling out is a protected form. The
"shaded boxes" would be form fields. To make them work right, you have to
protect the document for forms. You can turn off the shading using the Forms
toolbar (or Tools | Options | View: Show field shading: Never), but the
shading does not print in any case.
