In a pc ezine I was told to delete temp files, go to find, bring up all
files ending in temp and delete all except present date.
I want to get rid of these if I can, I presently have 83 files. Can I safely
delete all these in windows xp? It takes and hour or more for Norton to scan
and I'd like to cut this down if I can.

Thank You
Joanne

Yes you can delete them. they should be in the
C:\Documents and Settings\YOU\Local Settings\Temp folder.

.
If you have IE (Internet Explorer) on your desktop. The
icon should look like a lower case "e", and you have the
latest version 6.0 Even version 5.0 and 5.5 have a
feature to delete Temp Internet files. Just Rightclick
the icon and click Properties. A windows opens and in
the center you can click delete files and also click the
block to delete offline files. If you have version 6.0
you can also click to Delete Cookies. You can also
delete History or set it to no more than 7 days.

Yes, this is safe to do. Search for *.tmp files. Some appications make
temporary files without using the system temp file folders, so using the
built-in cleanups won't get them all.

Open My Computer, right click on a drive, and choose Properties. In the
lower right you should see a button for 'disk cleanup'. You can delete
temp files using the system temp folder, plus temporary internet files, from
here.

You might also wish to reduce the size of the Temporary Internet files
cache - go into Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, and on the
General Tab, look at the 'temporary internet files' section. Click on
Settings, and in the middle of the next dialog you'll see the setting for
the cache size. IE can sometimes take several hundred megabytes for this,
which isn't really needed. Mine is set to about 30 meg or less.

Don't forget to empty the wastebasket before lauching the scans, too.

That will remove current temporary internet files, but alas, will not affect
any temp files created or used by other applications.

You mean "tmp" presumably.

and delete all except present date.

You can even try to delete those with the present date. The only ones you shouldn't delete are those in use, and since Windows won't let you delete those, it's safe to try to delete them all.

You certainly can, and should, do this periodically. However 83 is a small number, and it's unlikely that doing this will speed up Norton's scan significantly.

Yes, but this has nothing to do with her question, which was about deleting tmp files, not temporary internet files.

Be a little careful. I have System Mechanic which lists all tmp files
and says careful but OK. Well, one of those was pft1b.tmp which
happened to have (who knows why) the driver for RecordNow a Windows XP
application, so that when my reboot followed, XP said, "I've found
hardware" and went looking for that file. After clicking Cancel then
Ignore for a dozen times XP then came to desktop. I did a System
Resotre although I could have restored all my .tmp files as System
Mechanic defaults them to Recycle.
