Deleting Shortcuts

Is there anyway to fix it, so that the message:
' You are only deleting the shortcut, not removing the program
To remove the program go to the Control Panel '

doesn't pop-up when you delete a shortcut?

There must be, as I have never seen it.
I get no message like that when deleting a shortcut and just deleted a
few to be sure.
Is that the message verbatim?
Is it only on certain shortcuts?

Yes it's only on certain shortcuts. I've seen the message but so seldom
that it's not really a bother, nor have I been concerned enough to keep
track of which shortcuts are affected -- obviously, the shortcuts are
for programs, not documents.

Bill

No, the message isn't verbatim, but it gives you the jist of what the Message
box says.

It IS only on certain shortcuts, and it only SEEMS to be the shortcuts on
the desktop/start menu that are installed automatically when you install a
program.

Like, if you were to install WINAMP, and select "Create a desktop icon," you
would get this message if you deleted the shortcut.
However, if you DIDN'T select "create a desktop icon," but later created one
yourself, it would NOT display this message, if you deleted the shortcut.

This is what it seems to be, I may be mistaken.

This message is given when the Current User deletes a shortcut from the All
Users Start Menu, as I recall.

OK. If you can get the message verbatim, please return.
I cannot get a message by deleting any desktop or start menu shortcuts
created by installing (I deleted five shortcuts for different
programs)

I cannot get the message by deleting shortcuts in the AllUsers menu as
suggested by another respondent.

How about deleting a few and see if you can get the exact message?
You can always restore them from the Recycle Bin.

Alright, well I took a screenshot of it for you:

But, what the other respondent was talking about is a completely different
message.
What he's talking about is something like (not verbatim):
'Modifying this folder will affect all users who log onto this computer'
That one doesn't bother me as much as the one I'm seeking help for.

Confirm Shortcut Delete

Send To | Desktop (create shortcut) from an .exe file that is in
%programfiles%. Go to the Desktop, right click the new shortcut and select
Delete.

You get this message...
---------------------------
Confirm Shortcut Delete
---------------------------
Deleting the shortcut to xxxx only removes the icon. It does not
uninstall the program.

If you want to uninstall the program, use Add or Remove Programs in Control
Panel.
---------------------------
Delete Shortcut Cancel
---------------------------

Add or Remove Programs in the message box is a link to appwiz.cpl.

The reason why...

[[The Confirm Shortcut Delete dialog box is displayed because the xxx.exe
file is a registered program that is installed in the Program Files
folder.]]

[[When you attempt to remove a shortcut for a registered installed program,
you receive a Confirm Shortcut Delete dialog box that contains a link to the
Add/Remove Programs tool.]]

Hi Wes

I don't doubt you for a moment, but it doesn't happen on my computer.

I tried your procedure with Photoshop, Nero and BitComet, all of which
are in Program Files and also appear in Add/Remove Programs. The
shortcuts deleted without a whisper of warning. I wonder if it worked
for Alan.

OK. I see that. I looked as the details supplied by Wes and couldn't
get the message until I allowed delete confirmation.

Try right-clicking the Recycle Bin, selecting Properties and uncheck
"Display delete confirmation dialog".
That is one of the first things I do with a new computer or O/S since
Win95, so that explains why I have never seen the message.

....Alan

Thanks Wes.
I allowed delete confirmation on the Recycle Bin and got the message
from the type of shortcut you outlined.
It seems an easy fix to disable delete confirmation, as I always do.

Only if I enable delete confirmation in the Recycle Bin.

Hi Alan,

I'll add that little gem about delete confirmation to my fund of knowledge.

I can get excited at times and because I use Shift + Delete quite often, I
have the delete confirmation turned on. Just in case. A better method
would probably be to *not* to use Shift + Delete. But, no matter where you
are, there you are. ;-)

Alright, unchecking the "Display confirmation box gets rid of that message,
but it also get's rid of "Are you sure you want to delete this file?"

What I want is to get rid of
"Deleting this Only Removes the Shortcut, not uninstalls the program"
but still keep
"Are you sure you want to delete this file?"

Is there anyway to remove only the one Message?
