I was wondering, how can you permanently delete search
entries in Windows XP? I have tried doing the "drop down
the list, highlight the word, and press the delete key"
This will work while the search window is still open.
But, once i close the window, and then open it back up
again, the words are still there. I know I can turn off
AutoComplete. But when you turn it back on, the words I
wish to delete are still there. Can anyone plese help me
in deletin the search entries? I would greatly appreciate
it. Thank You.

go>start\run and type in regedit and click ok. Now follow this route by clicking the + sign beside the entries in this order. HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/RunMRU Now right click on RunMRU and then click permissions and then in all cases set the permission to "deny" . Close out and that stops the URL drop down list and the Run line list. For the history. HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/SearchAssistant/ACMru Right click on ACMru and then click permissions and in all cases set to deny. Close out.
I know you only asked for the search history but I figured if you found that annoying than the URL list and the Run command list would be a pain as well. There are tons of garbage like this in XP that you can turn off. Balloon Pop-ups, tip pop-ups, status messages, even the "minimize, maximize, close" (- â–¡ x) on the top right of your IE toolbar that pops up when you hover your mouse over the symbols can be gotten rid of. It just takes some time. e:mail me if you want more of these types of edits. Good luck. {:~)

This process works and clears them from run also:

Clear IE History, AutoComplete, Clear the TIF, Clear the RunMRU, Typed URL's
and Clear List (depending on which Start Menu you are using): Right click
the Start button/Properties/Customize/Advanced/Recent Documents/Clear List.

A small utility I created that clears certain History Lists

Clear Recent File Lists - Includes Search and Run Menu (Line 41)

Clearing History May Not Remove Pages You Visited Today in Internet Explorer

Clear and stop are two different concepts Kelly. What I gave him or her were the registry routes to stop all search, URL, and Run command histories all together not just clear the present list and then have a whole new one in the next day or two. Many utilities like Window Washer and MRU-Blaster as well as Spybot Search and Destroy do a marvelous job of clearing the present recorded history. If on the other hand you wish to stop all recording of said history then follow the regedits I suggested. {:~)

Yes they are and I am fully aware of that.

Including the original post in your reply would be a great help here.

Edit IE URL is a freeware that lets you keep only the URLs you want t
see in the Internet Explorer's address bar. Edit IE URL can also b
used for clearing Internet Explorer Address Bar history, as it ca
remove any of the URLs you don't want.
These URL addresses are maintained in the Windows Registry and can b
edited using a Registry editor. However, since it is dangerous to edi
registry manually, let this program do the work for you.
All you have to do is uncheck mark the URLs you don't want, and click
button. The program remembers the URLs you need, so that each time yo
reopen the program, the previous check marked (saved ones that yo
need) are automatically checked.

EditURLs

http://www.aandrc.com/editurls/index.htm
EditURLs is a FreeWare program that provides the user with th
capability to edit individual URL addresses in Internet Explorer'
Address Bar. These URL addresses are also referred to as "Typed URLs".
EditURLs can also be used for clearing Internet Explorer Address Ba
history.
These URL addresses are maintained in the Windows Registry and can b
edited using a Registry editor. However, one is generally cautione
that a miscue with a Registry editor could render one's syste
inoperable. Additionally, the Value names for the URL entries must b
named consecutively (url1, url2, url3,...).
EditURLs provides an easy to user interface to accomplish editing o
the "Typed URLs" in the Windows Registry and maintain the require
consecutive Value names.
In addition to simple editing and deletion of individual "Typed URLs"
EditURLs provides a function for deleting all of the URLs.
Another feature that many users find convenient is the capability t
restore a saved copy of the "Typed URLs". That is, the user ca
maintain his/her personal set of "Typed URLs" in a Master set fo
restoring at the click of a button. Recent additions include a functio
for Sorting the URLs and 'up' - 'down' buttons for manual reorderin
the URLs.
EditURLs does not contain any 'ad-ware' or 'call-home' functions.
