If I disable system restore will the assorted restore point files be
deleted autmatically? Of not where are they located by default?

Yes, all of them.

Alias
Of not where are they located by default?

The easiest way to delete all restoration point is using Disk Cleanup (under
More Options) in System Tools. Turning Off means that you don't want to use
it but it keeps the old data on your partitions. So before turning off it do
a disk cleanup.

If you want to check out the files (which is not recommended for normal
users) then goto any of your drive.

From Tools - Folder Options - Uncheck Hide Protected Operating System Files
You can see folder with "System Volume Information" name.

Let us know if this information is useful to you.

Theoretically all of them, but you'll probably spot a few stragglers in
C:\System Volume Information
(if you get access denied, you'll need to change permissions on the folder
(possibly in safe mode) to view its contents via Right-click > Properties >
Security tab)

Yes all of your restore points will be deleted if you disable System
Restore. Once you enable it again you will begin recreating new points.
If you wish to purge all but the one most recent restore point you can go to
Accessories->System Tools->Disk Cleanup->More Options tab

Thanks to all who responded, I'm a lot better informed now than a few
hours ago!

In theory, yes, they will be deleted.

To show System Volume Information

Go to: Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View/Show Hidden File and
Uncheck Hide Protected Operating System Files.

Then go to: C:\System Volume Information

But the way to fix your problem is to create a restore point and then use
the Disk Cleanup to delete all but the last restore point. The virus will be
gone, if your virus checker already deleted it from your system.

Right click your Root drive/Properties/Disk Cleanup ... let it run. Then
click on More Options/System Restore/Clean up.
