I was setting up a new dailup connection, called it PRN
and allowed a shortcut to be placed on the desktop. Needed
to delete the desktop icon - get the message that I can't
because it is an invalid shortcut. The file is located at
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop, but I can't
delete it via Windows Explorer from there. Looked through
the registry, but can't seem to find anything associated
with this file (prn.lnk) to edit.

So how do I get this file off my desktop?

Rebooted to a command prompt in safe mode. Tried to delete
PRN.lnk - not successful. "The filename, directory name,
or volume label syntax is incorrect."

You are trying to delete a printer. Which is difficult. Prn IS A PRINTER and thus can't be a fle name.

a.. The following reserved words cannot be used as the name of a file: CON, PRN, AUX, CLOCK$, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9. Also, reserved words followed by an extension-for example, NUL.tx7-are invalid file names.

Try going back into the bad dialup connection setting and renaming it (don't
use prn) or deleting it from there.
