Deleting file locations

I used to be able to delete file locations from Tools, Options (User
templates, Startup, etc). Now, in 2003, I only seem to be able to browse for
another location, not physically remove the path. Any ideas? It seems
clumsy to have to leave a location as "C:" or some such...

There is no need to keep repeating this question.

I am not sure why you would not wish to set a location - even if it is the
default location, but if it offends you, you can remove the entries from the
registry directly -
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\General

We're not just talking the default location here but places like the Startup
folder where there could potentially be different templates on user's
machines that give adverse results. Thanks for the longwinded solution but
strange that M/soft have removed the easy way.

In case anyone managing this newsgroup is reading, the reason I posted this
three times is that it kept telling me there was an error and to try and post
my message another time.

Unfortunately editing the Registry is the only way. :-(

I don't think they deliberately modified the behavior, it was a side
effect of the modifications they made to the common Office dialog
boxes.

Regarding the message you received, it means there was an error
posting the notification in your profile rather than your post in the
newsgroup. I know, the message doesn't sound like that - I've
encountered it myself and if wasn't already aware of the problem I
would have created my post again. :-)

If you encounter the message again, log out and then log back in to
clear it up. Then click the "Notify me of replies" command after your
post shows up in the newsgroup.

Also, this was a bug we thought had been corrected so could you
provide us with more information?

- Do you recall the text of the message?
- Did you select "Notify me of replies"?
- How long were you logged in the newsgroups?
- Any other oddities or information you can recall.

Thanks for that Beth. I'm afraid I can't remember the exact wording though I
just got another (some sort of scripting error) when I first clicked Reply to
your post (it took me straight here when I clicked No):

------------------
A Runtime Error has occurred
Do you wish to Debug?

Line:1
Error: 'nodeList[...].threadType' is null or not an object
------------------

Although Martin gives another reason for wanting to delete a path, the
reason that I have been tempted to do so is that deleting the "Clipart
pictures" path is the only way to force Word to default to the last folder
used instead of always opening in My Pictures (or whatever other folder is
selected in File Locations). When you are inserting many pictures from a
specific folder (*not* My Pictures), this can be very time-consuming; adding
the folder to My Places is a big help, but it still requires one more click.

Beth,

I just got the error you wanted to know about again (when trying to post a
message after ticking the notify-me-of-replies checkbox):

An error occurred while sending your post
________________________________________

We're sorry, but there was a problem with the system and your post was not
received. The error has been reported to Operations and will be investigated
as soon as possible. Please try again later.

Hi Martin,

I appreciate you following up on this, thanks for the update. :-)

This is the message I was referring to previously. It's an error for
the notification subscription in your profile rather than your post in
the newsgroup. Your post will still be sent but the notification
subscription for replies will not be posted to your profile.

Since your last report I've learned this is still an issue on a
specific portal for the newsgroups so if you continue to encouter it
you may want to try accessing the newsgroups through this link instead
which gives you access to just the Office application groups:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/com...&cr=US&dg=microsoft.public.word.docmanagement

If you are already using the this portal and are encountering the
behavior then please let me know so I can pass this information along.
