Attempting to delete a legitimate contact in Windows Mail causes Windows
Explorer to stop working, after which it then shuts down. The contact is not
deleted. Why can't I simply delete a duplicate contact in Windows Mail
without having the environment shut down? Does something have to be set in
Options first for this to happen? Thanks.

Start Windows Mail, then click Tools, then Windows Contacts, then right
click in the empty space under the right end of the toolbar, then click on
Customize This Folder, then the triangle, then Contacts, then Apply, then
OK. This should leave you in the proper program to delete contacts,
so click on the contact you want to delete, then Delete.

If Robert's suggestion does not help, try dragging the unwanted
contact directly to the Recycle Bin.

Dragging the contact across the Desktop to the Recycle Bin works. After
following Robert's good instructions, Windows Explorer still does not behave
properly.

Would changing the attribute from "Read Only" to "Archive" help?

Thanks again.

My contacts are not read only, and they delete when I tell them to.
I'm not sure what the Archive attribute is for.

I agree that Contacts should not be 'Read Only', which
could well be the source of the problem. The Archive attribute
does not matter; it is a flag that Windows uses to determine
if the file has been backed up since it was last changed.
