I recently placed an animated .gif on my desktop, which I had
downloaded from the web. Now I can't get rid of it. It is not an
icon and right clicking does not bring up an option to delete. Can
anyone help me with this? Thanks.

Right click an empty area on the desktop, left click Properties. When the Display
Properties window opens click the Desktop tab. Then click the Customize Desktop button on
the lower left. When the Desktop Items window opens click the Web tab. In the box
beneath the heading Web pages: click to remove the checkmark to the left of the GIF,
which will keep the file on your system but remove it from your desktop. Or, if you want
to Delete the GIF totally, highlight it, then click the Delete button on the right. (If
the Lock Desktop Items option on bottom left has a checkmark, click to remove that
checkmark before doing the above). Then click the OK button.

Sounds like it may be spyware (but not sure). Try Bazooka first it tells how
to remove most spyware. Run these programs to check for spyware/malware.
After installing
update them, then boot into safe mode and run them. You should update
and run them weekly.

I have included some links at bottom to help optimize windows let us know if

Make sure you have a firewall active at all times. If nothing else use
the one built into XP, but there are a variety of free third party ones
that do a better job from Sygate, Zone Alarm or Kerio.
