I purchased a new computer and gave my old machine to my parents. I deleted
e-mail accounts etc, but now my parents have their own internet connection,
the windows messenger programme is still set for my account and contacts.
When they go on-line the computer still identifies itself with my account
name and my contacts are attempting to contact my parents.

I told them to just delete the contacts but that deleted the contacts from
their machine and my machine - so how do i delete my account from the old
machine and set them up with their own windows messenger service?

Greetings Stephen,

Just have them do the following -- click the Start Button, then click the Control Panel.
Then, click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select the Windows account name in question,
and then on the left side of the screen, under Related Tasks, click 'Manage my Network
Passwords'. In the window that opens, click the Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry and click
'Remove'.

After this, they can simply create their own .NET Passport at http://register.passport.net
and sign in with that.
