Deleting a message in an open window opens the next message in Inb

If I open a message window, then delete that message, the next message in
sequence opens in a new window. If I want a message to open, I'll open it
myself. How can I prevent deleting a message from forcing the next message
to open into a new window?

Don't delete the message until you have closed the Message window.

Yeah, I kind of figured that out. It doesn't work that way in Outlook, and
makes no sense that it works that way in Windows Mail. It creates extra
steps. Is it not somewhere in my "Preferences" to change that?

no. Unfortunately not.

I'd like to jump in here and say that I have the same problem. When I forward
or reply to an email, the original is gone and the next one is opened. I
don't like that. What if I did not want to open that next one. Is there a
place where I can have that original email just stay in view after forwarding
or replying to it, so I can delete it or close it myself?

You can disable the Preview Pane under View | Layout and then delete
messages without opening them. Otherwise, I think you are stuck with what
you've got.

Thank you Steve. Unfortunately after the disable of Preview Pane there is no
other option. Will have to just be careful to close each e-mail by the 'X' as
well as knowing what the next email is/or who it's from, by deleting all
unwanted e-mails b4 reading others. A bit of a bother considering the OE in
Win98/and XP was far more user friendly and Vista seems to have gone
backwards on this function.

There is a way to do it with the new Vista program.........I discoverer it
just by playing around with it. Select Ctrl A, where all the emails are
"highlighted", while holding down the Ctrl key, click on the emails that you
want to keep, let go of the Ctrl key and then hit delete. Only the ones
"unhighlighted" will remain in your box.
