Deleteing columns in Excel 2007

In previous versions I was able to delete non-adjacent columns, but
this version seems not to allow it... When I choose non-adjacent
columns, the option for deleteing them is greyed out. I looked it up
in help, which wasn't very helpful, checked Excel preferences, just in
case there's a setting that might allow that, again to no avail.
Is there a way to do it in this version?

TIA,
Nash

Hi Nash

I suspect your sheet is protected.
Right click on the sheet tab>Unprotect.
With unprotected sheets deleting non-adjacent columns works the same in
XL2007 as in earlier versions.

Across row 1 I entered a, b, c, x, d, e, z, f (x in D1 and z in G1)
Copied this down four rows.
Selected D1:D4; help CTRL; Selected G1:G4
Right clicked; selected Delete then Entire Column
I am left with each row displaying a,b,c,d,e,f
So I was able to delete two non-adjacent columns in XL2007

Repeated the same thing but this time I clicked on column headers. Was still
bale to delete.

Maybe try again and let us know what happened
best wishes

Thanks, Roger.
I've been working on data obtained through Microsoft Query, and for
some reason Excel decided it should protect it. Didn't happen in
previous versions. My company switched to Office 2007 and everybody is
cursing MS for shuffling *everything* around...

Also, I don't really understand why it is that I can delete non-
adjacent rows in a protected sheet, but not columns... I wouldn't call
that consistent.
Something is either protected or it's not...

Nash

Hi Nash

When a sheet is protected, I cannot delete Rows or Columns in XL2007.
The behaviour you describe does sound totally inconsistent.
Is there any other setting that is different on the sheet?

Hi Roger

I don't know and to tell you the truth I don't really care that much.
I'm so busy trying to figure out how to do stuff I was able to do
before, in previous versions that I don't really have the energy nor
the will to try to figure it out. I wouldn't even know where to look.
It's almost like having to learn everything from scratch.

Cheers,
Nash

Hi Nash

The vast majority of things are still the same in XL2007 as in XL2003. There
are only a few things that have been deprecated.

If you are struggling in the short term to find where things are, then you
could download the free addin from Shah Shailesh, which will give you the
2003 menu structure on the addins tab.
Download XL2003 Menu from
http://in.geocities.com/shahshaileshs/

In the longer term, I would urge you to become familiar with the new Ribbon
menu. Its here to stay and once you get used to it it is fine.

Hi Roger

Thanks for that link. I agree I should learn to use the Ribbon, and I
won't install that add-in, but it might come in handy for some of my
older coleagues who *are* struggling with new features in 2k7. They
had a hard enough time learning how to do things in previous versions,
I guess there's no point in making them learn this as well. It will
also save me some time, since lately I've been spending more of it
showing them how to do the most basic things.

OK, here I am again, in case anyone is still reading this.
I fetched some data from an external database via Microsoft Query.
Saved the file as Excel 97-2003. Checked to see if the sheet is
protected. It's not. The workbook is unprotected as well.
When I select non-adjacent rows, i can delete them from the sheet, but
if I select non adjacent columns, I can't.
There's nothing to unprotect.

What do I do next?

TIA,
Nash

Sorry Nash, I'm out of ideas on this one.

You might want to start a fresh thread, saying what you have tried so far,
and see if anyone else jumps in.
