Basically, you reinstall the driver. The Audio Device is usually also
known as the sound card.

If you go into Control Panel, System, Hardware. Device Manager, the Audio
Device would be listed (if it isn't deleted) under Sound Video, and Game
controllers.

In here, click on Action, Scan for hardware changes. This should reload the
drivers for the sound card.

If you see an entry with a yellow and black exclamation mark, right-click on
it and choosen Update Driver.

If neither of those work, you may need to just reinstall the sound drivers
from disk or download from the manufacturer's site. If you now what the
soundcard *is*, or if disks came with the machine, that's easy to do; but if
you don't know, a free system audit program called Belarc Advisor can give
you a very good idea.

Let it run, and when it presents its results in your browser, look for the
"multimedia" section.

Finally, if these don't help, post back with precise details of the machine.
However, if it's a Dell, there's a "service tag" on the back. If you go to
the Dell support site and search it using that number, you'll be given a
list of all the original drivers and hardware.
